Healthy Backs

This is a strange but true story. The discs at the base of your spine support more weight when you’re sitting than when you’re standing up. And if you sit even just 20 degrees off the ideal position, the pressure on your lower lumbar discs can increase to more than 2.7 times your total body weight.
And we don’t need to tell you sitting crookedly simply makes matters worse. But often in a badly designed chair you are forced into odd positions to alleviate the numbing caused by the incorrect underlying structure. Your brain automatically reorganises your body to be as comfortable as possible in the circumstances. Your muscles and brain are continually seeking compromises. And compromise is certainly not comfort.

Comfort is Not a Luxury

For your body to be truly comfortable, the chair or sofa has to be more than soft on your bottom.
A lot goes into making a seat that is ergonomically correct – one that supports you in such a manner that the initial comfortable feel is continued. One that doesn’t do damage to your back, or tire your legs. But one that relaxes them in a health giving way.
Sit in ergonomically designed, well-upholstered furniture and more than your muscles begin to relax. Your blood supply begins to circulate more freely. Your back relaxes as your spine is gently supported in the right place and on the correct angle. In fact, sitting on incorrectly designed furniture creates more problems than it solves.
